Enrico Fermi, from Atoms to the Universe

The Embassy of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute cordially invite you to the closing Conference of the celebrations dedicated to Enrico Fermi and held in Washington DC. Dr. Enrico Flamini, Chief Scientist at the Italian Space Agency (ASI), will speak briefly about the Italian Space Agency and its latest projects. ASI’s history goes hand-in-hand with that of our close collaboration with the US in the development of cutting-edge space technologies.

Enrico Fermi work is indeed generally known for the understanding of the most complex atoms, but his scientific line of research covered also statistical mechanics, the theory of solids as well as the settling of electro- dynamics and the outstanding theory of beta decay. Apparently, these researches seem not to be correlated with the space, instead there are some of the current main topics in space sciences that have their roots in Fermi’s works. The Fermi coordinates are to be taken into account for planned gravity experiments, the weak interactions, derived from the beta decay theory, are the basis of the energy of our neighbour star: the Sun. The capability of create new radioactive elements allows to generate power for deep space missions and his study on cosmic rays still confirms its value with the results of the space high energy observatory named after him.
