The Maryland Lyric Opera Young Artist Institute Gala Concert

The Maryland Lyric Opera Young Artist Institute sponsors a three-week intensive institute for young artists in the DC/MD/VA area.  5 singers and a pianist participate in an intensive, holistic program that addresses the needs of young artists pursuing a career in opera.  Young artists work primarily on full Italian opera roles, recitatives, and arias with a true master of the Italian opera repertoire, Louis Salemno

This special program is in support of Maryland Lyric Opera's mission to help young singers in our community to get the training they need in what we believe to be the best method possible following the traditions of the golden age of singing whereby artists would see their maestri 6 days a week for intensive training.

Young Artists receive daily one on one vocal coaching on full Italian opera roles from conductor Louis Salemno. Maestro Salemno was selected by Plácido Domingo to work at Washington National Opera’s (WNO) Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program where he has been resident coach for the last 11 years. Prior to his post at WNO, Maestro Salemno held posts at Teatro Alla Scala (Milan, Italy), Barcelona’s Teatro del Liceu, Teatro Real de Madrid, Teatro Principal de Valencia, Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and San Francisco Opera among others. Maestro Salemno has served as the Principal Guest Conductor of the Serbian National Theater at Novi Sad, Artistic Director of Manitoba Opera (Canada), and Music Director of Portland Opera.  Salemno has led productions with Opera Company of Philadelphia, New Orleans Opera, Portland Opera, Opera Pacific, Baltimore Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Florentine Opera of Milwaukee, Austin Lyric Opera, Opera Omaha, Columbus Opera, Tulsa Opera, Opera Carolina, Madison Opera, Krakow Philharmonic (Poland), Capetown Symphony (South Africa), Pittsburg Symphony, Houston Symphony, Madison Symphony, and Louisville Symphony.

Participants receive voice lessons and mentorship from baritone Javier Arrey whose upcoming season includes appearances at the Metropolitan Opera and at Washington Concert Opera among others. Arrey’s previous experience includes engagements at the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia of Valencia, Washington National Opera, Washington Opera, Prague’s Estates Theater, Opera Lafayette, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, and Teatro Municipal de Santiago Chile among others.

The three-week program includes discussions with renowned figures from around the industry including the legendary baritone Sherrill Milnes, the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Bishop, and Professor & Tenor Hans Stein from the Universidad de Chile among others.

The Maryland Lyric Opera Young Artist Institute Gala Concert is the culmination of this intensive three-week study led by Maestro Louis Salemno and it will include arias and ensembles from the core Italian Opera repertory.
